Zelensky Loses Poland's Highest Honor Amid Controversy Over WWII Unit Naming
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky has been stripped of Poland's Order of the White Eagle due to the naming of a military unit after a controversial WWII group, prompting a diplomatic dispute between the two nations.
President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine has been stripped of the Order of the White Eagle, Poland's highest state honor, as a result of Kyiv's decision to name a military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), a group associated with controversial actions during World War II.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki condemned Ukraine's decision to honor the UPA, referring to it as "outrageous," "incomprehensible," and "deeply disappointing." He emphasized that this diplomatic dispute would not alter Poland's support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
In Ukraine, the UPA is viewed by many as a heroic force that fought for the nation's independence against both the Soviet Red Army and Nazi Germany, as well as Polish authorities. Consequently, the title "Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army" holds significant prestige for Ukrainians.
Conversely, Poland accuses the UPA of committing genocide against ethnic Poles in Volhynia, particularly during the years 1943 to 1945. Nawrocki stated in a video on his official website, "For the overwhelming majority of Polish society, the UPA remains, above all, a formation responsible for the brutal crimes committed against citizens of the Republic of Poland during World War II."
He further articulated that the Ukrainian authorities' decision to glorify the UPA is not only offensive but also undermines the trust that has been built over the years, especially in light of Poland's welcoming of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. "Poles opened their borders, their homes, and their hearts to millions of Ukrainians," Nawrocki remarked.
Nawrocki also pointed out that Ukraine's aspirations to integrate into European structures necessitate an honest confrontation with its historical narratives. He stated, "A united Europe was built on the rejection of totalitarianism and the cult of violence. These principles must apply to everyone. For those who do not understand this, there can be no place in the European Union, and Poland will certainly not allow it."
Ukraine is currently seeking membership in the European Union and recently participated in the initial phase of membership negotiations in Luxembourg.
In an effort to ease the increasing diplomatic tensions between Kyiv and Warsaw, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has taken to social media. He indicated that the ongoing feud "delights" Russian President Vladimir Putin and urged both Zelensky and Nawrocki to "calm emotions, not to stoke tensions."
The UPA symbolizes resistance and the struggle for independence for Ukraine, despite Poland's claims that approximately 100,000 ethnic Poles were killed during the Volhynia massacres. The group's red and black flag is frequently displayed by Ukrainian troops on the front lines today. Zelensky stated that he named the military unit after the UPA to "restore the historical traditions of the national army."
Zelensky was awarded the Order of the White Eagle in 2023 by then-President Andrzej Duda. Although Zelensky has not publicly addressed the dispute, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized the Polish president's actions, calling them "a strategic mistake" that benefits only Moscow. In response to the controversy, Sybiha announced that he would return an award he received from Poland in 2022, asserting, "No president of another country will dictate our history to us."
