Trump Announces Rally During July Fourth Celebration on National Mall
President Trump revealed that a rally branded as a 'TRIBUTE TO AMERICA' will be part of the National Mall's July Fourth festivities, sparking criticism over its partisan nature.
On July 4th, President Donald Trump announced via Truth Social that a rally, labeled as a "TRUMP RALLY," will be integrated into the celebration of America's 250th anniversary on the National Mall. The rally is set to take place at 7 P.M. EST, featuring the Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument as its backdrop. Trump described the event as the "most spectacular TRUMP RALLY of them all," aimed at honoring the nation's "People, Spirit, Strength, Resolve, and Triumphs."
This announcement is significant because the events commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence are traditionally nonpartisan, focusing on the nation as a whole rather than highlighting a specific political party or president. Trump has faced scrutiny in the past for using his presidential platform to promote personal interests or to make himself the focal point of events that could otherwise be seen as apolitical. He has also been a prominent figure in celebrations related to America's semiquincentennial.
In a related context, after several artists withdrew from performing at the "Great American State Fair," an event intended to celebrate the 250th anniversary, Trump took it upon himself to host an opening ceremony. This was framed as a celebration of America's milestone. Additionally, on his 80th birthday, Trump held a UFC fight night at the White House, which was also ostensibly linked to the 250th anniversary. His family has been involved in promoting a business venture that sells gold coins priced up to $12,000, capitalizing on the event's significance.
The timing of Trump's rally announcement coincides with several states opting out of the "Great American State Fair" on the National Mall. While officials cited financial constraints as the primary reason for their decisions, a spokesperson from a Democratic-led state indicated that concerns regarding the partisan nature of the event were also a factor, as previously reported by CNN.
The Freedom 250 initiative, a public-private partnership established by the White House, aims to create events that align with Trump's vision for the 250th anniversary, contrasting with the nonpartisan America250 initiative. Trump mentioned that the July Fourth rally will feature performances from military bands, orchestras, and ceremonial units, all of which will perform patriotic songs and selections from his personal "playlist."
In his announcement, Trump emphasized that there would be no performances from artists who have criticized him, stating, "We will have none of those people that put you to sleep and constantly complain!" The event will be set against the backdrop of the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool, which is currently undergoing cleaning by the Interior Department to address "residual algae" issues.
The main event for July Fourth on the National Mall, known as the "Salute to America," is expected to include a parade, military demonstrations, and various activities, culminating in a fireworks display over the monuments, according to the National Park Service.
