Tata Electronics Confirms Data Breach Amid Growing Role in Global Tech Supply Chains
Tata Electronics, a significant tech supplier to Apple and Tesla, has confirmed a data breach involving over 630GB of data, following reports of stolen files on a hacker forum.
Tata Electronics, an Indian manufacturer specializing in electronics and semiconductors, has confirmed a data breach that occurred weeks after files reportedly obtained from the company surfaced on a hacker forum. The company is a major supplier to tech giants such as Apple and Tesla.
The hacker forum listing claims to offer more than 630GB of data, which allegedly includes over 204,300 files taken from Tata Electronics. A sample review by TechCrunch suggested that these files contain specifications for Apple suppliers and documents related to Tesla's manufacturing processes. However, the authenticity and completeness of the data have not been independently verified.
Established in 2020, Tata Electronics is a crucial player in India's initiative to boost its electronics manufacturing and semiconductor production capabilities. The company operates multiple facilities across India and employs over 75,000 individuals, according to the information on its parent company’s website. Tata Electronics has formed partnerships with various global firms, including Apple, ASML, Intel, Qualcomm, and Tesla, as manufacturers seek to diversify their supply chains beyond China and increasingly consider India as an alternative production hub.
Cybersecurity expert Rajshekhar Rajaharia informed TechCrunch that the data listed on the forum included Outlook email conversations, SAP-related documents, and files purportedly associated with Tata Electronics’ clients, including Apple and Tesla.
In a statement to TechCrunch, a Tata Electronics spokesperson acknowledged the cybersecurity incident that was identified on some of its systems 'a few weeks ago' and indicated that the company had promptly activated its response protocols. The spokesperson emphasized that the incident did not affect their operational capabilities across businesses.
Despite this confirmation, Tata Electronics did not provide details regarding the nature of the compromised data, the number of individuals or organizations impacted, whether clients had been informed, or if any information related to customers like Apple and Tesla was compromised.
Reuters reported that Tata Electronics had informed certain employees at its iPhone assembly operations about the data breach last week. The report also mentioned that Apple is currently investigating the incident and that a ransom demand had been made to Tata Electronics.
This breach occurs as Tata Group is increasingly involved in global technology supply chains. The company began iPhone manufacturing in 2023 after acquiring the Indian operations of Wistron, a long-time Apple supplier. Subsequently, Tata Electronics secured a 60% stake in the Indian branch of Pegatron, another significant partner for Apple.
Furthermore, Tata entered a semiconductor supply agreement with Tesla in 2024, signifying its expanding partnerships with some of the world's largest technology firms.
As of now, neither Apple nor Tesla has responded to requests for comments from TechCrunch.
