SpaceX Enters Compute Agreement with Reflection AI for Nvidia Chips

Reflection AI has secured a significant deal with SpaceX to access Nvidia's AI chips, marking a notable commitment to open-source AI infrastructure valued at up to $6.3 billion.

Reflection AI, an open-source artificial intelligence startup, has signed a deal with SpaceX to gain access to Nvidia’s latest GB300 AI chips. This agreement, which is set to commence on July 1, 2026, will see Reflection AI pay $150 million monthly until 2029, totaling up to $6.3 billion. Both parties retain the right to terminate the contract with a 90-day notice following the initial three months of the agreement, as stated by the company in a communication to TechCrunch.

This latest deal is smaller in scale compared to previous agreements SpaceX has made with other AI companies, such as Anthropic and Google. Anthropic's contract is valued at $1.25 billion per month, while Google’s agreement costs $920 million monthly, both extending through July 2029. Elon Musk has publicly minimized the significance of the three-year term, pointing out the flexibility for either party to cancel at any time.

Reflection AI is leveraging this compute agreement, its first of this kind, to emphasize its commitment to an open-weight AI strategy. This approach is presented as a viable alternative to the closed models developed by leading labs like Anthropic and OpenAI. The focus on open-weight AI models has gained traction especially after the U.S. government's ban on Anthropic’s proprietary models, Fable and Mythos, which has led to increased scrutiny on the risks associated with reliance on closed systems.

Founded in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers, Reflection AI describes this compute deal as one of the largest commitments to open AI infrastructure announced to date. A spokesperson for the company remarked, "Recent events highlight how important open source is to the AI ecosystem, with more nations and enterprises recognizing the risks and costs associated with exclusively depending on closed models. Our deal with SpaceXAI signals Reflection’s strategic importance within the frontier AI ecosystem, and more compute means more runway to build the world’s best open models at scale."

The Colossus 2 data center, where the AI chips will be utilized, was initially constructed by xAI, a company founded by Elon Musk, which has since become part of SpaceX. As SpaceX's own AI projects have not progressed as anticipated, the company has begun monetizing its substantial AI chip assets by renting them to leading AI research labs around the globe.
