Only one Dan Sullivan can run in Alaska's primary election, official says
Alaska's elections director has ruled that only one Dan Sullivan, the incumbent senator, can appear on the primary ballot, deeming the candidacy of a retired schoolteacher misleading to voters.
In Alaska's upcoming primary election, only one individual named Dan Sullivan is permitted to run, according to a ruling from the state's election authority. This decision impacts retired schoolteacher Dan J Sullivan, who shares a name and party affiliation with the current Senator Dan S Sullivan, rendering him ineligible for the ballot in the primary scheduled for August.
The state's elections director, Carol Beecher, determined that Dan J Sullivan's candidacy was intended to confuse voters, thereby undermining the fairness of the election process. He has been given a 30-day window to appeal this ruling.
The inquiry into Dan J Sullivan's candidacy began after Senator Sullivan accused his Democratic opponent of attempting to manipulate the race, as Democrats aim to gain a majority in the U.S. Senate during the upcoming midterm elections in November.
Beecher's letter, issued on Monday, stated that Dan J Sullivan's candidacy was not filed in good faith. She highlighted that he has not previously registered to vote using the name Dan Sullivan, has no prior affiliation with the Republican Party, and has created campaign materials that closely resemble those of the incumbent senator. Additionally, he employed a political consultant known for supporting Democratic candidates.
Although the investigation did not reveal any evidence of direct coordination between Dan J Sullivan and Democratic officials or candidate Mary Peltola, the situation has sparked controversy. Senator Sullivan's campaign expressed support for the decision, thanking the lieutenant governor for the investigation aimed at preserving the integrity of Alaska's elections. They emphasized the importance of preventing what they termed a 'sham candidate' from misleading voters.
In a recent press conference, Senator Sullivan vehemently criticized his opponent's tactics, suggesting they were aimed at tricking constituents and undermining the electoral process in favor of Peltola. His campaign spokesman accused Democrats of engaging in 'dirty, dishonest tactics' to manipulate the election.
Dan J Sullivan, who moved to Alaska from the Midwest over 50 years ago, has never held public office. He stated on social media that he believes he meets the qualifications to run and is motivated by dissatisfaction with the incumbent senator's twelve-year record. He expressed his desire for change, indicating that he believes running for the Senate is where he can make the most significant impact.
In an interview with Alaska Public Media, he cited his opposition to former President Donald Trump's proposed $1.8 billion 'anti-weaponization fund' as a key reason for his candidacy. Despite acknowledging the difficulty of his campaign, he remains committed, stating, 'Let's be realistic, it's a huge long shot. But I'm going to give it my best shot.'
On his campaign website, Dan J Sullivan aims to distinguish himself from the incumbent by stating, 'We need a Sullivan that stands up for Alaska.' He has not yet responded to requests for comment from the BBC.
