Meta has unveiled new AI features on Facebook, including 'AI Mode' for improved searches and content creation, amid its ongoing efforts to compete in the AI landscape.
In an effort to enhance user engagement and keep pace in the competitive AI landscape, Meta announced on Monday the rollout of new artificial intelligence features on Facebook. These updates are designed to transform how users search for information, create content, and interact with the platform.

The key feature being introduced is 'AI Mode,' which allows users to search Facebook using plain language questions. This mode utilizes Meta AI to provide synthesized answers derived from public posts across the platform, including content from Groups and Reels. Instead of browsing through a list of search results, users can ask questions and receive direct responses based on ongoing discussions among users.
This announcement follows the quiet launch of Forum last month, a Reddit-like application that features its own 'Ask' tab. This tab enables users to submit questions and receive answers sourced from conversations taking place within Facebook Groups.

The introduction of both AI Mode and the Ask tab raises concerns regarding the reliability of the information provided, as the AI summarizes content generated by everyday users rather than relying on verified sources. This issue mirrors concerns previously expressed about the accuracy of Google's AI Mode, particularly in discussions on Reddit.
In addition to search capabilities, Facebook has also introduced new editing tools that allow users to create video montages with enhanced collage cutouts and transition effects. An AI-driven feature now enables users to modify their appearance in photos, with options to change clothing, hairstyles, and accessories.
For example, sports enthusiasts can virtually don their favorite team jerseys by tapping the 'AI Edit' icon in Stories and selecting 'Wear It.' Alternatively, they can update their profile picture by choosing 'Restyle profile picture with AI' and 'Wardrobe.'
These updates are part of a broader initiative by Meta to enhance Facebook's AI functionalities. Earlier this year, in February, the company launched animated profile pictures that bring still images to life by adding animations like waving or placing virtual party hats. In March, Meta integrated an AI feature into Facebook Marketplace that automatically responds to buyer inquiries on behalf of sellers.
Most recently, Facebook introduced an AI assistant tailored for creators, which provides personalized suggestions based on content performance, including optimal posting times and summaries of audience feedback.
Collectively, these feature enhancements indicate a strategic direction for Meta, aiming to make Facebook's AI tools more engaging and functional while exploring new revenue streams. Concurrently, the company has initiated global subscription plans for Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, starting at $3.99 per month, which unlock additional features. Reports suggest that more AI-related subscription options may be forthcoming.
