GOP Congressman Suggests Low-Tech Solution for Reflecting Pool Issues
Rep. Tim Burchett proposes a natural approach to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool's algae problems following a costly renovation by Donald Trump.
Representative Tim Burchett, a Republican from Tennessee, has suggested that the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool should be allowed to return to a natural state amidst ongoing issues with algae and paint, which arose shortly after the completion of a $14 million renovation project led by former President Donald Trump.
The renovation, celebrated by Trump as a flawless restoration, has faced criticism, particularly regarding the recent algae problems. Trump has claimed, without substantiating evidence, that the issues are the result of vandalism.
In a response to a query from the MeidasTouch Network regarding the controversy, Burchett stated, "It’s algae. It’s science. It’s just going to happen." He acknowledged the necessity for maintenance, mentioning that a filtration system would be required, along with treatments such as chlorine or bleach, and noted that alternatives like peroxide exist.
However, Burchett also expressed a more unconventional view, advocating for a less hands-on approach. He suggested, "I think it would be cool if they just let it go and create an ecosystem. Have fish in there and everything and just let it go. I think it would be a cool way to go."
Burchett then shared his personal experience with pool renovations, recounting that when he purchased his home, the pool was essentially a "frog pond." He revealed that although he received quotes for the renovation amounting to $80,000, he managed to complete the work himself for approximately $2,500.
