Victor Munoz Joins Liverpool for €40 Million as Club Aims to Replace Mohamed Salah

Liverpool has secured the signing of Spanish winger Victor Munoz for €40 million, aiming to fill the gap left by Mohamed Salah's departure. Munoz previously attracted interest from Newcastle and other top clubs.

Liverpool has made its first signing under manager Andoni Iraola, acquiring Spain international Victor Munoz for €40 million. This move comes after Munoz was heavily linked with a transfer to Newcastle United, who had hoped to enhance their attack, which ranked ninth in the Premier League last season. Newcastle's pursuit faced a setback as Munoz will now be tasked with addressing the challenges following Mohamed Salah's exit, the injury of Hugo Ekitike, and the expected departure of Federico Chiesa.

Munoz, at just 22 years old, has had a notable career thus far. His journey has taken him through prestigious youth academies at Barcelona and Real Madrid, before he moved to Osasuna, where he earned his first call-up to the Spanish national team and was included in the squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Originally from Catalunya, Munoz began his football career with local club Sant Gabriel before joining Barcelona's famed La Masia academy. He spent three years there before transferring to another local team, Damm, at the age of 14, seeking more playing time. Representatives from Damm noted that when Real Madrid expressed interest, the deal was quickly finalized, as other clubs were also keen on the young talent.

At Real Madrid, Munoz made his first-team debut during the late stages of the 2024-25 season, notably playing against Barcelona. He later appeared in a victory over Sevilla and participated in two matches during the Club World Cup that summer. However, seeking more game time, Munoz signed a five-year contract with Osasuna for €5 million, with Madrid retaining a buy-back option.

While Osasuna struggled in the league, finishing ninth and reaching the Copa del Rey quarter-finals, Munoz managed to make significant contributions, including crucial goals and assists that helped the club avoid relegation. His performances earned him two Player of the Month awards, and he made his senior Spain debut against Serbia, scoring a goal off the bench.

Despite having only two caps by the time Spain's coach Luis de la Fuente named his World Cup squad, Munoz's impressive performances led to his selection among the 26 players headed to the tournament. De La Fuente praised Munoz, stating he possesses tremendous potential and is ready to compete at the highest level.

With Liverpool activating Munoz's €40 million release clause, the young winger chose to move to Anfield, despite Newcastle's interest and inquiries from clubs like Manchester United, Bayer Leverkusen, and Barcelona.

Munoz is recognized for his electrifying speed and exceptional dribbling skills, making him an exciting player for fans. He is versatile, capable of playing on either wing or centrally behind a striker. His work ethic has been highlighted, with De La Fuente describing him as "very humble," showcasing energy and discipline even during challenging times at Osasuna.

As he gains experience, it is expected that his accuracy will improve, complementing his direct style and ability to create scoring opportunities. Comparisons have been made between Munoz and Anthony Gordon, who recently left Newcastle for Barcelona, as both players share a direct and confident playing style.

Munoz's playing style has drawn comparisons to the late Diogo Jota, particularly in his positive dribbling and determination to advance up the pitch. While he may not be the flashiest winger, he possesses the technical skill, aggression, and energy to be effective in his role.

As Munoz prepares to showcase his talents at Liverpool, he will also be participating in Spain's World Cup campaign. Although he was an unused substitute in Spain's opening match against Cape Verde on June 15, the tournament is expected to provide him with invaluable experience as he transitions to a top Premier League club.
