Tim Allen Reflects on Fatherhood Journey: 'I Never Really Wanted to Be a Dad'

In a recent interview, Tim Allen discussed his initial hesitance about fatherhood and how his experiences with his daughters shaped his perspective on parenting.

Tim Allen has shared his thoughts on fatherhood, expressing that he was initially uncertain about becoming a dad. The actor, known for his role in Toy Story 5, revealed that he did not foresee himself reaching this milestone before having children. He has two daughters: Katherine Allen, 36, from his previous marriage to Laura Deibel, and Elizabeth Allen-Dick, 17, with his current wife, Jane Hajduk.

"I never really wanted to be a dad," Allen stated in an interview with Us Weekly, published on June 10. He humorously remarked that he has never been particularly fond of children.

Allen reflected on his journey of parenting, noting that it has been a gradual process. He mentioned that his wife often expresses a desire for more children, saying, "We wish we’d had five kids because you learn on the first two." He pointed out that during Katherine's early years, he was frequently away, which meant her mother took on most of the parenting responsibilities.

At the age of 72, Allen acknowledged the challenges of being a father to daughters. Coming from a family with seven boys and two girls, he admitted that raising girls presented a different set of experiences for him. He commented on his limited interest in stereotypical girl-related activities such as fashion, appearances, and gossip.

Instead, Allen focused on instilling practical lessons in his daughters, emphasizing the importance of financial literacy and self-care. He believes these lessons are valuable for both boys and girls.

Despite the challenges, Allen has found joy in his relationship with his daughters. He shared some frustrations about not being able to engage in traditional 'boy' activities with them, stating, "Sometimes I don’t engage because they don’t like to wrestle and they’re not really into boy stuff." However, he noted that his older daughter shares his passion for cars, while the younger one enjoys spending time in his workshop.

"But there’s no trade-off like the affection of daughters," he remarked, highlighting the unique bond he shares with them. "They’re great. They’re just absolutely wonderful."

Allen is not alone in his experiences as a 'girl dad.' Other celebrities have also opened up about their strong relationships with their daughters. Ryan Reynolds, for instance, expressed his love for fatherhood, stating, "I love being a girl dad." He has three daughters with wife Blake Lively.
