The confrontation was captured by pitchside microphones and reported by Shreeves, who described the intensity of the exchange. After Pickford appeared to respond to Tuchel's commands, the manager firmly retorted, telling him, 'you know what you’re supposed to do, do as I told you!'.
Tuchel's assistant, Anthony Barry, corroborated the manager's concerns during a halftime interview with ITV, mentioning that the team had displayed 'fearful patterns' and struggled with decision-making on whether to play long or short passes during a shaky first half.
The first half concluded in a dramatic 2-2 tie, with goals from England's captain Harry Kane and Croatia's Martin Baturina and Petar Musa. The second half, however, showcased a transformed England team. Kane, who equaled Gary Lineker's record for England World Cup goals during the match, credited Tuchel for refocusing the players during the halftime break with a crucial team talk.
