Rio Ferdinand Identifies England's Sole 'World-Class Player' After World Cup Win Against Croatia

Following England's 4-2 victory over Croatia in their World Cup opener, Rio Ferdinand declared Harry Kane as the team's only 'genuinely world-class player'.

Rio Ferdinand, the former Manchester United defender, has asserted that England has just one player who is genuinely world-class, despite the impressive talent pool available to head coach Thomas Tuchel. This statement came after England's remarkable 4-2 victory against Croatia in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup on Wednesday.

Ferdinand, who is a six-time Premier League champion and former England international, expressed his views on his YouTube channel, evaluating the current squad's talent as they pursue World Cup success. He stated, "Harry Kane is our only genuinely world-class player right now. There’s others teetering around it but he’s the absolutely world-class player in the squad. If you’re looking at players who sit right at the top table and are there comfortably? He is that for England."

England kicked off their World Cup campaign with a strong performance, defeating Croatia 4-2, thus taking the lead in Group L. Harry Kane played a pivotal role in the match, scoring two goals in the first half that allowed him to equal Gary Lineker as the nation's leading goalscorer in World Cup finals. Despite Croatia's efforts, with goals from Marin Baturina and Petar Musa keeping them competitive at halftime, England's skill ultimately prevailed.

In the second half, England showcased their dominance, securing the win with additional goals from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford. Ferdinand's admiration for Kane is shared by other former international players.
