The Princess of Wales has been noted for her effective adaptation to life within the royal family, with royal author Catherine Mayer describing her approach as "very clever." Mayer shared these insights during an episode of HELLO!'s A Right Royal Podcast this week.
Mayer highlighted that Kate, age 44, engages in "very little" public speaking and refrains from sharing personal confessions. This approach has led to her being perceived as someone who opts for a more reserved presence, using symbolic gestures instead of a louder public persona.
Catherine Mayer stated, "She has done such a very clever job of finding a way to adapt to the institution. That does not mean I think she’s had it easy." This reflects the complexities of her role within the royal family.
The author pointed out that both Kate and Prince William have curated a circle of friends who communicate with the media only under specific conditions, maintaining a level of discretion regarding their personal lives.
Mayer also noted that Kate's educational background has played a vital role in her ability to integrate into royal life. The Princess studied History of Art at the University of St Andrews from 2001 to 2005, where she met Prince William, her future husband.
According to Mayer, Kate has mastered the use of imagery in fulfilling her royal duties. She has been involved with the National Portrait Gallery and has taken up photography, demonstrating her understanding of how to control public perception.
For instance, Kate often shares personal photographs from family life, allowing her to manage the narrative and protect her family's privacy. Mayer explained this strategy, stating, "She is also credited with the idea of giving out intimate family pictures as a way not of infringing her own privacy, but protecting it, because it stops paparazzi shots from having the same level of value. So it's really clever."
The Princess is known for sharing photographs each year on her children's birthdays and during significant events like Mother's Day. In a notable instance, in 2024, she disclosed her cancer diagnosis through an intimate video, later sharing another family video to announce the completion of her cancer treatment.
Currently, Prince William and Kate reside at Forest Lodge in Windsor with their three children: Prince George, who is 12 years old, Princess Charlotte, aged 11, and Prince Louis, who is 8.
