Manuel Neuer has confirmed he will retire from the Germany national team after the 2026 World Cup, aiming to conclude his career with a second world title.
Manuel Neuer has announced his decision to step away from the Germany national team for a second time after the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup. The renowned Bayern Munich goalkeeper, who had previously declared his retirement after Euro 2024, returned to the squad under the guidance of Julian Nagelsmann for this summer's tournament. Neuer aims to conclude his distinguished international career by winning a second world title.
The 40-year-old goalkeeper had initially retired from national duty following the Euro 2024 tournament, citing personal reasons for his decision. At a press conference, Neuer elaborated on his initial retirement, stating, "I stepped back in 2024 with a good reason after a good home Euro. For me it was the right decision. It felt right." He acknowledged that continuing to participate in national team duties would have placed a significant sporting burden on him over the past two years.
Despite making a successful return to the starting lineup under Nagelsmann, Neuer has made it clear that he has no intention of reversing his decision regarding his future. He expressed excitement about his fifth consecutive World Cup appearance, while also preparing for life after the national team once the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico concludes.
Neuer firmly stated, "For me it is clear that this is my last tournament. I do not plan to be there in two years' time for the next Euro. In the last days I have dealt with the fact that these are the last games for Germany. But I want to look forward to all the games and not to any goodbye shirts."
His return to the national team pushed Oliver Baumann to the bench, despite Baumann being considered a potential starter during Neuer's absence. However, Neuer insists that there is no tension within the team, emphasizing the importance of collaboration. "We work together with Oliver. We support each other and train for the team. After coming together we discussed things and talked about how it came about (with my return)," Neuer explained. This spirit of teamwork is crucial as Germany seeks to overcome the disappointment of recent group-stage exits in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
As Germany gears up to face the Ivory Coast on Saturday, Neuer is focused on the immediate goal of securing a spot in the knockout rounds. A victory in this match would guarantee advancement, allowing the veteran goalkeeper to aspire to become the first German player to win two World Cups. Neuer remarked, "This is our goal. We have everything in our own hands. We don't want to look back at past World Cups. The team does not deal with that. We look at the next step and the next step is Ivory Coast. To qualify after the second game would be special and would allow us to look a bit further ahead. It is an absolute present to be here again. It would be very special to do it a second time but if I did not see the chance that we could do it, I would not be sitting here."
