Malia and Sasha Obama made a notable public appearance at the grand opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago on Thursday, an event that marked a significant milestone for the family.
The sisters joined their parents, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, on stage during the ceremony. Malia, aged 27, donned a plunging gray blazer paired with a skirt, showcasing her long auburn hair. Meanwhile, Sasha, 25, made an impression in an off-the-shoulder white top and matching skirt, accessorized with an oversized brown belt and styled in a slicked-back half-up, half-down look.
The opening ceremony of the center was a star-studded affair, featuring live musical performances from artists such as Christina Aguilera, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, and Eddie Vedder. Among the celebrity attendees were notable figures including Bill and Hillary Clinton, filmmaker Stephen Spielberg, media mogul Oprah Winfrey, journalist Gayle King, and actor Tom Hanks.
Located in South Side Chicago, the Obama Presidential Center encompasses a museum, various concert and event venues, public park space, and a new branch of the Chicago Public Library. The Obamas chose to inaugurate the center over the Juneteenth holiday weekend, with celebrations planned to continue throughout the weekend.
Since the conclusion of their father's presidency in 2017, Malia and Sasha Obama have largely stayed out of the public eye. At the time of Barack Obama's election in 2008, Malia was just 10 years old and Sasha was only 7, leading to their childhood being closely scrutinized until they reached ages 18 and 15, respectively.
Last month, the sisters made another rare public appearance alongside their mother in celebration of Mother's Day. Michelle Obama has previously discussed the pressures faced by their family during Barack's presidency. In a podcast appearance on "Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce" last year, she expressed her concerns about balancing their public and private lives: "I wanted to give my girls enough rope to live and be normal teenagers, but I was also worrying about them turning up on Page Six because they were doing what normal kids would do."
Michelle further explained the importance of creating a supportive community for her daughters: "We’d have to build a real community of trust around them because I didn’t want them sitting home on Saturday night not understanding what it was like to be out and have a life before they went to college." She also revealed that the well-being of her daughters was a significant factor in her decision not to pursue a political career, stating that she did not want to thrust them back into the public spotlight.
