Liverpool 'agree' to dangerous contract clause in Victor Munoz deal
Liverpool has reportedly finalized a deal for Osasuna winger Victor Munoz, who was initially linked to Newcastle. The transfer includes a buy-back clause for Real Madrid.
Victor Munoz, an Osasuna winger, seemed poised to join Newcastle United before Liverpool intervened and secured the transfer.
Munoz, who has a history with both Barcelona and Real Madrid at the youth level, made his senior debut for Real Madrid in 2025, appearing in two matches.
After joining Osasuna in 2025, Munoz had a productive season, scoring seven goals and providing five assists in 36 appearances, contributing to Osasuna's 17th place finish in La Liga. He has also earned two caps for the Spanish national team.
The 22-year-old is versatile, capable of playing on either wing or through the center, attributes that have drawn the interest of Liverpool's manager, Iraola. His signing could potentially impact Federico Chiesa's position at Anfield, as Chiesa has been linked to a move away from the club this summer.
Following the news of Munoz's transfer, the Spanish media outlet AS reported that Real Madrid will receive a portion of the £34.6 million transfer fee due to a buy-back clause. This clause could allow Real Madrid to reclaim Munoz at the end of his first season with Liverpool.
According to the report, Real Madrid will receive €25 million for the player, which includes the €5 million that Osasuna paid for his transfer, as well as half of the release clause that Liverpool is now fulfilling to the Navarrese club.
Both Real Madrid and Barcelona had considered signing Munoz; however, Jose Mourinho rejected the deal for Real, while Barcelona chose to sign England winger Anthony Gordon instead.
Liverpool is expected to pay the transfer fee to Osasuna in two installments, and they are still eyeing RB Leipzig's left winger Yan Diomande, in addition to PSG’s Bradley Barcola.
While Munoz was still a candidate for Newcastle, La Liga expert Phil Minshull praised him during an interview with BBC Radio Newcastle, calling him 'one of the pearls of Spanish football.'
Minshull described Munoz as an 'outstanding young talent' who is likely to be part of Spain's World Cup squad. He highlighted Munoz's strong right-footed attacking ability and versatility on the field, noting that he can play on both sides and is physically robust.
Despite concerns regarding his passing ability—having only registered two assists last season—Minshull emphasized Munoz's capacity to challenge defenders and create space for teammates. He also noted Munoz's work rate, highlighting his commitment to tracking back and supporting the defense.
