Leboeuf, a member of the 1998 World Cup-winning French squad, shared his thoughts on Mbappe's current and future trajectory. The young forward has been recognized as a potential superstar since his early days at Monaco, where he made a name for himself as a teenager. He achieved significant success with the French national team, winning the World Cup in 2018 and scoring a hat-trick in the final against Argentina during the 2022 Qatar World Cup, despite facing disappointment in a penalty shootout.
Having established himself as Paris Saint-Germain's all-time leading scorer, Mbappe is viewed as a 'Galactico' at Real Madrid. When asked about this aspect of Mbappe's game, Leboeuf reflected on his upbringing, stating, "He's been created to be the main man. Since he was eight years old, the world has promised him he would be one of the best because he was exceptional at a young age and has continued to excel. However, he has recently recognized that football is a collective game, where the team itself is the star. This is especially true for the top teams that win titles, such as Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain, which succeed through teamwork."
Leboeuf elaborated on the importance of collective spirit in football, citing examples of teams that have triumphed despite individual talent not shining through. He noted that Real Madrid's previous successes in the Champions League were often due to a strong team dynamic, even when individual performances were lacking. He pointed out that the current football landscape places excessive importance on individual accolades like the Ballon d'Or, which he believes detracts from the essence of the game.
"It's a different world now," Leboeuf commented. "It's not just Mbappe who is to blame for this. We have created an environment where individual achievements are overemphasized, which is misguided. Football has consistently shown that without teamwork, success is elusive. We have seen star-studded lineups like Neymar, Messi, and Mbappe struggle to fit into a cohesive unit, which is critical for winning games."
He contrasted this with Liverpool's success, where multiple players contributed to the team's achievements, highlighting how stars like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Alisson all played vital roles. Leboeuf expressed his preference for players who anticipate plays and make quick passes rather than relying solely on individual skill to dribble past opponents.
