Karmelo Anthony's pursuit of freedom is entering a new phase as he has engaged a formidable legal team to contest his murder conviction. This announcement was made on June 22, 2026, when a group of experienced attorneys revealed their involvement in the case, signaling a renewed effort to overturn the conviction.
The legal team, which includes Gary Bledsoe, the president of the Texas NAACP, veteran appellate lawyer Russell Wilson II, and civil rights attorney Brooke Cluse, stated that they would conduct an independent review of the trial record and explore all possible avenues for appeal. They expressed their commitment to scrutinizing the trial proceedings for any potential errors that could lead to a reversal of the conviction.
Anthony was convicted earlier this month of murdering Austin Metcalf and subsequently sentenced to 35 years in prison. He indicated his intention to appeal almost immediately, filing a notice of appeal within 24 hours of his conviction. The newly appointed legal team emphasized that their investigation would focus on identifying any mistakes made during the trial and on raising issues that might support overturning the verdict.
In their statement, the lawyers acknowledged the emotional impact the case has had on both families involved, remarking that the tragedy has irrevocably altered many lives.
The conviction arose from a deadly confrontation at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, where Metcalf was fatally stabbed. During the trial, Anthony claimed he acted in self-defense; however, the jury ultimately rejected this defense and found him guilty of murder.
Recently, a Texas court unsealed a substantial amount of evidence related to the case, which includes bodycam footage, surveillance video, 911 calls, and crime scene photographs. Some of this newly released material features clips of Anthony’s emotional interaction with police following the incident.
