GTA 6: Price, Release Date, Pre-Orders and Everything You Need to Know

By Riley Adams 1 month ago

Rockstar's upcoming title in the Grand Theft Auto series is poised to be the year's most significant game launch, with crucial details about its release and features now available.

The next chapter in Rockstar's highly successful Grand Theft Auto (GTA) franchise is anticipated to be the most significant game release of the year. The developer has announced that pre-orders for GTA 6 will open on June 25.

Industry analysts project that GTA 6 could become the most expensive video game ever developed, with estimates suggesting that production costs might exceed $1 billion (£866 million).

The confirmed release date for GTA 6 is November 19, following two previous delays from initial launch windows in autumn 2025 and May 2026. When the second delay was communicated, Rockstar stated that additional time was required to ensure the game met the high standards of polish that fans expect.

The game will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S, but there is currently no information regarding a PC version or a potential release on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

As of now, Rockstar has not disclosed the game's price, which is likely to be revealed when pre-sales commence in late June. Some analysts speculate that it could be the first game priced at $100 (£76).

There is no confirmation on whether an updated online mode will be available at launch, though given the success of GTA Online, it is anticipated that such a mode will eventually be introduced.

The implications of potential age verification regulations in the UK, particularly regarding social media and messaging in gaming, on GTA 6 remain uncertain.

GTA 6 will introduce its first playable female protagonist in a 3D environment, named Lucia, who will be joined by her partner Jason as the game's second playable character. The narrative is expected to follow their Bonnie and Clyde-like escapade through the darker aspects of American society after a heist goes awry.

Similar to previous iterations, the sixth installment will be set in a fictional US state, specifically Leonida, which is Rockstar's fictionalized version of Florida. Notably, Vice City, inspired by Miami, will return as the primary city in the game.

On June 18, Rockstar unveiled the game's cover art, which featured thematic elements such as alligators and flamingos, hinting at the game's setting.

The development of GTA 6 has been a lengthy process, especially considering that the last entry, GTA 5, was released in September 2013 and has since become one of the highest-selling games ever, with nearly 230 million copies sold.

While it is unclear if Rockstar has been developing GTA 6 continuously since then, the company did release Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2018, another major title.

Rockstar first confirmed they were working on GTA 6 in February 2022. The rising costs of game development and the pressure to meet the franchise's high expectations have contributed to the extended wait for this installment.

The company has faced challenges, including a security breach by teenage hackers that resulted in leaked footage and images. Additionally, there have been allegations of 'union-busting' practices directed at former employees at Rockstar North, the Edinburgh-based studio responsible for the game.

The GTA franchise stands as one of the most lucrative entertainment properties in history. GTA 5 has generated billions in revenue for Rockstar, lauded for its expansive sandbox gameplay that allows players to explore vast open worlds with a high degree of freedom.

Vic Hood, a freelance video game journalist, remarked that each installment of the series has consistently pushed the boundaries of technology and gameplay. She noted that GTA Online has been instrumental in establishing the live service model that is prevalent today.

Hood also highlighted the cultural relevance of the series, stating, 'Rockstar has always had its finger on the pulse of music, entertainment, societal, political, celebrity, and online culture trends, and they've never shied away from satirising these things in GTA games.'

As anticipation grows regarding how GTA 6 will surpass the monumental success of its predecessor, any new updates, regardless of their size, have generated considerable excitement. The two gameplay trailers for GTA 6 have garnered approximately 447 million views combined.
