Concerns over severe storms may delay or suspend the upcoming match between France and Iraq in Philadelphia on June 22.
The highly anticipated match between France, a two-time World Cup champion, and Iraq, a team that has struggled in international football, is scheduled to take place at Philadelphia Stadium, previously known as Gillette Stadium, on June 22. However, the event may face delays or even suspension due to the potential threat of storms in the area.
FIFA officials are reportedly on standby to implement official protocols should inclement weather arise during the match. According to FIFA regulations, which align with guidelines from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), games must be halted if lightning is detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium, necessitating the evacuation of fans from their seats.
In the event of a lightning strike, all players must leave the field and seek shelter. They will be allowed to warm up briefly before the game can resume, but only after a 30-minute period without lightning. NOAA's guidelines indicate that activities should cease if lightning is seen, thunder is heard, or if the weather appears threatening.
There are currently no specific rules dictating a point at which a match is entirely abandoned, with FIFA evaluating each situation individually. Furthermore, no maximum wait time for players has been established.
Certain cities, including Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Miami, and New Jersey, are particularly prone to electrical storms, as are locations in Mexico such as Mexico City and Monterrey. Nevertheless, severe weather is typically not a significant concern in Philadelphia.
If the match cannot be completed, it is standard practice for it to resume from the point where it was interrupted on a later date.
Lauren Lambrugo, Chief Operating Officer of Philadelphia Soccer 2026, discussed the procedures that would be implemented in the event of lightning during the match. She stated, "They'll start to evacuate the stadium to the main concourse and seek emergency shelter. And then it has to wait 30 minutes before they bring everybody back onto the field."
When questioned about the possibility of postponing the match, Lambrugo affirmed, "They will make sure that the match is broadcast and played tomorrow."
