Eyewitness Accounts Reveal Chaos and Injuries from Bedford Train Collision
A train crash near Bedford on Friday resulted in one fatality and nearly 90 injuries, prompting eyewitnesses to recount the harrowing experience.
On Friday afternoon, two trains collided near Bedford, resulting in one death and numerous injuries, as reported by the British Transport Police. According to the East of England Ambulance Service, almost 90 individuals were injured in the incident, with more than 30 sustaining serious injuries.
Teresa Itabor, a passenger from Wellingborough in Northamptonshire, was traveling on the 16:57 train from Wellingborough to London to celebrate her birthday when the collision occurred. She recounted that she had her eyes closed and headphones on when the crash happened. "We left Bedford station and there was a massive bang... I didn't know what was going on; my head hit the seat in front of me," she stated. Itabor described the scene as she opened her eyes, seeing people on the floor with blood everywhere, and noted that the carriage doors had jammed and would not open.
Dr. Peter Knapp, another passenger, was in the front carriage of the train that collided with another. He described the aftermath as chaotic, saying, "When I got up, I saw all of the chairs everywhere. It felt like I'd been in a bomb explosion. When I got up, I saw people's bloodied faces and people's legs looked broken and there was smoke everywhere." Knapp observed police collecting passenger details while some individuals were taken to the hospital, noting that some were spitting out blood.
Brett Byatt, who was also on the train, sensed something was wrong when he felt the train slow down. He explained, "I knew something was up because the train never slows down from Bedford to Luton, and I felt it break." He detailed the moment of impact, saying, "Then it was like a boom, smash, and everyone that was sat down went flying into one another." Byatt witnessed a woman with a severely broken leg and another woman unable to move due to her back injury, alongside a man on the floor who could not move his neck, with passengers holding him still.
Shola Mene described the collision as "like a big bang". She recalled, "Then people flew from their seats, the seats were pulling, and then someone just flew across and hit my husband in the face. There was a lot of blood. A lot of people had facial injuries."
