Elastic Agrees to Acquire DeductiveAI for Up to $85 Million

By Jamie Chen 1 month ago

Elastic will purchase DeductiveAI, a startup specializing in AI-driven software bug resolution, for up to $85 million, marking a rapid exit for the company founded just three years ago.

DeductiveAI, a startup focused on utilizing artificial intelligence to identify and resolve software bugs, has reached an agreement to be acquired by enterprise software firm Elastic for a total of up to $85 million, as reported by a knowledgeable source regarding the transaction.

Founded in 2023, DeductiveAI emerged from stealth mode last November when it announced a $7.5 million seed funding round. This round was led by CRV and included investments from Databricks Ventures, Thomvest Ventures, and PrimeSet. At that time, the startup was valued at approximately $33 million, according to PitchBook data.

Both Elastic and DeductiveAI have not responded to multiple inquiries for comments. TechCrunch has indicated it will provide updates should either company choose to reply.

The acquisition signifies a quick exit for DeductiveAI, which operates in the rapidly expanding domain of AI site reliability engineering (AI SRE). The development of AI-powered site reliability engineering tools has gained prominence due to the significant increase in AI-generated code. By replacing traditional manual debugging methods with AI solutions, human site reliability engineers can redirect their efforts from merely fixing outages to more strategic tasks like product development.

This acquisition is indicative of a larger trend wherein established technology companies are actively seeking to purchase AI-native startups to incorporate advanced technologies into their existing product offerings, according to the source.

Elastic, which became a publicly traded company in 2018, is widely recognized for its Elasticsearch platform, a search and analytics engine that allows organizations to efficiently store, search, analyze, and monitor vast amounts of data in near real-time.

The company’s observability software—which provides engineers with tools to monitor software systems and detect security vulnerabilities—stands to gain from the integration of DeductiveAI’s technology. The source stated that incorporating DeductiveAI’s AI capabilities into Elastic’s system will enhance its observability platform, offering customers improved tools for real-time performance monitoring and automatic resolution of system failures.

DeductiveAI was co-founded by Rakesh Kothari, who previously served as vice president of engineering at the Lightspeed-backed analytics startup ThoughtSpot, and Sameer Agarwal, who has a background with the Apache Software Foundation and Meta, where he was one of the founding engineers at Databricks.

While DeductiveAI achieved approximately $1 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR), its growth has been outpaced by Resolve AI, a competitor considered one of the sector's early leaders. Resolve AI, co-founded by former Splunk executive Spiros Xanthos and Mayank Agarwal, was last valued at $1.5 billion after raising a $40 million Series A extension in April, just two years after its founding.
