Didier Deschamps Identifies Spain as World Cup Favorites Ahead of Senegal Match

France's coach Didier Deschamps has named Spain as the top contenders for the World Cup, while emphasizing his team's ambitions and addressing Ousmane Dembele's fitness ahead of their opening match against Senegal.

Didier Deschamps, the head coach of the French national football team, has minimized his team's status as frontrunners for the World Cup, instead highlighting Spain as the team to beat. As France prepares for their opening match against Senegal, Deschamps stressed that while his squad has strong aspirations, they do not currently hold the title of the world's best team.

Despite being the runners-up in the 2022 World Cup and having a highly regarded squad, Deschamps has officially designated Spain as the favorites for the tournament. He aimed to temper expectations surrounding the French team as they embark on their journey for more international success, indicating that another European nation sets the standard for others to follow.

In a pre-match press conference, Deschamps remarked, "If there's a favourite team, it's Spain, even though France legitimately aspires to win the title. But it's a long road ahead. France has top-level potential, even with a squad overhaul. I'm not going to consider the French team stronger than the others, but the clear favourite is Spain, I have no doubt about that."

Ousmane Dembele remains a crucial element of Deschamps' strategy. The Ballon d'Or winner recently enjoyed a successful season with Paris Saint-Germain, helping the club retain their Champions League title. However, his history of injuries raises concerns for the national team management, especially with a condensed tournament schedule ahead.

Deschamps explained, "It's true that Ousmane started early in the national team, but he had numerous injuries. With PSG, his Ballon d'Or puts him in the spotlight. He is very focused, with the desire to be very good and decisive, as he is quite regularly with his club, even if his physical problems have led him to miss quite a few matches. We let him celebrate the victory in the Champions League. Obviously, with a high-level Ousmane, it will be a plus."

France's campaign kicks off against Senegal, a matchup that recalls the 2002 World Cup when Senegal stunned the then-champion French team with a 1-0 victory in their opening game. However, Deschamps dismissed notions of a revenge narrative, pointing out that most of his current players were not even born during that historic match in Seoul.

"Senegal are one of the best teams; they have everything in terms of quality, players who play in the best clubs, a good midfield, an athletic and technical dimension," Deschamps noted. "We know what to expect, and they do too. It will be a high-level confrontation. Most of my players were not born in 2002. There is no revenge; that was 24 years ago. There is another page to write. We will do everything so that the result is in our favour this time."

Deschamps is well aware of the challenges that lie ahead. While he has named Spain as his top pick for the trophy, the immediate focus is on the formidable Senegalese team, which he believes deserves utmost respect. The priority for the French squad is to approach the group stage with maximum intensity rather than looking too far ahead to possible knockout rounds.

Further praising the Teranga Lions, Deschamps added, "Senegal is a great football nation, a solid and respected team. We know that they have nothing to envy about other great selections. It will be a difficult match, a real test from the start of the competition. We will have to be ready immediately."
