Amanda Seyfried expressed her support for Sydney Sweeney after the latter faced backlash for an American Eagle campaign, emphasizing their bond during a challenging promotional period.

Amanda Seyfried showed her support for her Housemaid co-star Sydney Sweeney following the backlash Sweeney faced due to her 2025 campaign for American Eagle jeans.

In an interview with British GQ published on June 15, Seyfried shared her approach to supporting Sweeney during the controversy, stating, "I don’t talk to her about it unless she wants to talk about it. I don’t want to be a source of anything, but whatever you need. You need some fun, you need to laugh, you need cake with me? That’s fine."

Seyfried, 40, acknowledged the difficulty Sweeney was likely experiencing as she balanced promoting The Housemaid with the backlash stemming from the American Eagle campaign. Critics condemned the campaign for allegedly promoting eugenics through its play on words with "good jeans" and "good genes."

Seyfried recalled advising Sweeney, "We’ve got to promote this movie and I can be a safe space." Despite the surrounding controversy, Seyfried noted that they had a positive experience on the press tour, saying, "We worked really hard and she seemed to be having fun, but I also understood that probably it can’t be f--king easy, where she found herself."

Seyfried expressed admiration for Sweeney's ability to remain kind and thoughtful amid the situation, recounting a birthday surprise from Sweeney. "She brought me all these cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery and gave me this most beautiful bracelet," Seyfried reminisced.

In response to the backlash, Sweeney, 28, opted not to engage directly. In a November interview with GQ, she commented on the situation, saying, "I did a jean ad. The reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life."

Sweeney further mentioned that the conversation surrounding the ads "didn’t affect" her, adding, "I knew at the end of the day what that ad was for, and it was great jeans."
